How the number to words converter works

Writing a number in words is needed on cheques, invoices, legal documents and receipts, where the amount in words prevents tampering and confusion. This converter splits your number into groups and names each group in English. You can choose the Indian system, which groups digits as thousand, lakh and crore, or the international system, which uses thousand, million, billion and trillion.

How the two number systems group digits

Indian: 1,23,45,678 → 1 crore, 23 lakh, 45 thousand, 678 International: 12,345,678 → 12 million, 345 thousand, 678

In the Indian system, after the first three digits, commas come every two digits: 1 lakh = 1,00,000 and 1 crore = 1,00,00,000 (100 lakh). In the international system, commas come every three digits: 1 million = 1,000,000, which equals 10 lakh, and 1 billion = 100 crore.

Worked examples

  • 1,25,000.50 in rupee format: Rupees One Lakh Twenty Five Thousand and Fifty Paise Only
  • 12,34,567 (Indian): Twelve Lakh Thirty Four Thousand Five Hundred Sixty Seven
  • 1,234,567 (international): One Million Two Hundred Thirty Four Thousand Five Hundred Sixty Seven
  • 3.75 as a plain number: Three Point Seven Five

Writing amounts on cheques

  • Start with "Rupees" and end with "Only" so nothing can be added after the amount. The rupee format does this for you.
  • Write paise as a number of paise ("and Fifty Paise"), and make sure the words match the figures box exactly.
  • Most Indian banks accept Title Case; UPPER CASE is also common. Choose your preferred letter case above.
  • Do not leave gaps between words where extra words could be inserted, and draw a line after "Only" if space remains.

The converter accepts commas and up to 15 digits before the decimal point (up to 99 lakh crore, or 999 trillion), and it handles negative numbers. In rupee format, amounts are rounded to the nearest paisa. Use "Copy words only" to paste the result straight into your document.
